Community Service e-Journal 5

After all that have been done, I would like to conclude that this course has been a success.
Community service provides the critical missing link for many students, an opportunity to apply academic learning to real human needs and to make the knowledge gained usable in
one's thinking beyond the situation in which the learning occurred. I have personally enjoyed
and found this community service meaningful by being able to help them getting through their
hard times dealing with studies’ difficulties. Therefore, I hope I have provided my mentee as
well as others with the motivation necessary to put forth effort in academics and gave them
opportunities to integrate and elaborate on their knowledge and increases the likelihood of
them transferring theoretical knowledge to actual practice.

Besides, this community service has shown that it can bring people together no matter what
age and race they are. It has been uniting people from diverse backgrounds to work toward
a common goal, building camaraderie and teamwork. It was a very positive environment to
be in and everything went very smoothly. In addition, most of us have discovered our hidden
talents that have change our view on our self-worth. In addition, one of the main benefits that
I’ve gained from this community service is that it builds a person’s character. It has helped
myself to work on skills of being able to communicate with people, being able to work in a
team and being able to take on leadership role. All of these skills that can be used
throughout my entire live.

Some people may ask, “Why is community service important to you?” Without
community service people would not know the meaning of charity and giving back.
Community service can be defined as a service that is performed for the benefit of the public
. It is very important to know that community service is not a responsible or an obligation;
it is a commitment. A person must want to do it with good intentions and not because they
are being forced to do so, only then you can enjoy and find it meaningful. Basically,
community service is a way for a person to give back to a community in which they live.
Therefore, one of the many ways of giving back to the community is by mentoring this
local high school students from Methodist Boys School.

People may see helping secondary school students is a small act a person can do in helping the
community. This is wrong and we have to be open-minded as I believe that a mind is like a
parachute and if it isn't open, it doesn't work. Community service is important to me because I
think that it is an honor to help others and make them smile. The world would be better if more
people help those who are in need.

This week, the kids came over to Taylor’s University and had a whole day tour. I was assigned to
do a slot from 2-4pm where some sort of ‘explorace’ was carried out. It was a fun experience to
see the kids running here and there competing with each other. I had to be at block C level 6
which was one of the pit-stops for them to get a clue. It was a Science block where posters
related to science were stick on the wall. As they get my pit-stop they had to read all of the
posters and questions will be given and they had to answer them correctly in order to get the clue.
The content of the posters were quite hard to understand but surprisingly all of the groups
managed to answer all of the questions correctly. I can see that the team spirit was there and
they even helped each other out eventhough they were not from the same group. They made it
as a very healthy competition and I must say I would do it differently to win if I were them.

As they collected all the clues, they had to go to the library and find the meanings of each word
from the computer. Some students already knew the meaning of some of words which saved
them a lot of time as compared to others. As they have completed everything they had to go
back to the classroom where the race was started. Later on they were asked to fill a
self-reflection questions regarding the activities they had. Some students did mentioned that
they were motivated to study hard to be in a school like Taylors. Some found the activities
was tiring while some felt that they had a rough idea to pursue what course in the future. I really
feel that somehow we achieved the goal of this week’s activity which is to guide and motivate
them to study hard and know what they want to be when they grow up.

Alas, I did not manage to go to the closing ceremony as I had a rehearsal for Tamadun Islam
subject. However, I did manage to write some notes to my mentees which are Praga and
Syawal. I hope they would remember and take my advice seriously through out the mentoring
session at their school and I hope the teachers will help them overcoming their weaknesses in
studies. I really wish I could see their progress and know how their final examinations results
are. All I could do now onwards is hoping for the best of them. On the other hand, I think
this course has helped me see the importance of helping other people when they are in need
for studies. Knowledge is meant to be shared with others and there is no point keeping them
to yourself. Besides, this course has also helped me to become a better person and make
me want to be a better person.

This week, we did not have to go to the Methodist school as they are having their school holiday.
However, we had to plan for their activities since they are coming over to Taylor’s University in
the next two weeks for campus exploration. As we entered the class, Ms Rabiah had presented
a few activities options to choose from. The activities include campus tour, campus exploration,
skills building, lunch time and otheres. Me and my group had choosen ‘exploration’ activity as
we found it to be more exciting than the other activities.

We had planned to make the students walk around the campus by doing a mini explorace.
The activity will require them to go to a number of checkpoints, covering every block of
different courses in the campus. The purpose of this activity is to provide them a thorough idea
of what every course can offer them in the future. For instance, they will have to go to business
school, engineering, mass communication and other blocks. At each checkpoints, they will be
explained about what each course are about. Besides, we would also want them to motivate them
to be study hard in order to get a position in a proper university learning environment.

In correlation to what we have taught them at their school, they will be getting an English word
from each of us at every checkpoint. After collecting all of the words, they will have to go to the
library to find the definition of the words. The first team to go back to the starting point with
correct definitions will win. I have a feeling that these activities planned for them will be exciting.

I really look forward to see the students in next to weeks and hoping that they come to
Taylor’s campus with their adrenaline fully rushed. After all, I believe they have worked hard
for their final examinations.

Community Service e-Journal 2

Last week we went to the Methodist school again to get the
students prepared for their English final exams. However,
my mentee, Praga was absent and I had to be a mentor
for other student named Syawal. I must say it was quite an
experience as he can’t really focus and was complaining
about how tired and sleepy he was. However, I managed
to keep myself together as I thought of my role to be there
was to help and teach him. Besides, I told him to hang in
there and to give his best as his exam for English was the
 next day.

I found that Syawal’s command of English was quite
decent as a Form 2 student and he managed to keep up
and understand quickly on what I taught him. However,
he was quite weak at pronouncing certain words. I asked
him to read one of the paragraphs and he stuttered.
Overall, I think Syawal is a smart student but maybe he is
just not putting much effort into his studies. English
language requires a lot of reading and speaking to ensure
the fluency and understanding. It is more up to the students
to be better at it. Therefore, I would suggest the school to
do some programs that require them to talk and speak in
English. Besides, it is also important for the students to
realize the importance of English language. Perhaps, the
teachers can expose them to the outside world where in
order to be successful, English should not be taken for
granted. I would say this because I were all once a student
and back then, my teachers did not really emphasize on
the significance of why we were learning instead of what
we were actually learning. Therefore, the students have to
know why is it important and see the uses of English
 language when they grow up.

On the other hand, I would say I managed to feel what the
teachers feel when handling  ‘rowdy’ students. It is
definitely not easy as they are not cooperative, can’t
think coherently and do what is best for them as they are
still 14 years old. Not many people can get through it if
they don’t understand what situations they are in. It
requires a lot of determination, patience and especially
passion in teaching. Therefore, I can definitely apply this
circumstance as a university student as to be more
understanding in what the lecturers feel and help them to
 ease their burdens or problems.

To conclude, last week’s activities has help me learned
some skills and experiences that are quite valuable and
made me see things differently. Besides, it has taught me
how to handle certain things with patience. Teaching is
not as easy as it seems because we need to constantly
deal a lot of students with different types of attitudes
and personalities. Therefore, different approaches needed
to be applied as not every student is the same.
